The IP address is used daily by us , just by connecting to the Internet. There are many functions, knowing what it is, it is very important because it will allow us to configure it, as we need or to connect more devices to it.
There are different types of IP addresses , although they all seem to behave the same, they really don’t. Today we will explain what they are and what these types of protocols are for.
In the last section of this wonderful post , we will show you the steps you must follow to know what version of the IP protocol you are using. You will find the steps to know the information from your Android or from your Windows.

The key to a network to work, are the Internet protocols. These are necessary so that what we know as the data exchange between two or more servers / computers can exist. The protocols establish rules and the conditions under which information transfers must be made.
There are various protocols in the Internet world, but the most common, important and considered as pillars are: the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Internet Protocol (IP).
A little history
One of the first civil organizations, which was well recognized and funded even by the Pentagon, formed mainly by Hackers and Researcher Bob Taylor, was ARPA (Advance Research Projects Agency), whose project larger in the 60s, which served as the basis for the promotion of internet protocols, was the interconnection of computers from different universities , making it possible through a central server. This is where ARPAnet was born.
Then in the 70s DARPA (US Defense Projects Research Agency) was born, where studies were carried out on data transmission, whose objective was to use satellites in conjunction with the waves radio, to propagate information.
Already by the year 75 the first official tests were carried out, and at the beginning of 1982 the TCP / IP became the standard so that the transmission of information through US military networks was more effective In the year 1983 the protocols were officially activated and recognized throughout the country.
So we must understand why many of the people say that the father of communication and Internet protocols was the US military.
The IP codes identify our computer and our connection , these are transmitted from a router or device through a range that is already assigned, in other words the IP is our identity , where an emission point and a reception point are established, others often call it EMIREC, where the reception point changes to be sender and sender to receiver.
The main function of the IP protocols is to prevent confusion between the equipment , so there are two types of IP, which are: dynamic and static . The static is the one assigned to the main device (the one that allows the transfer) while the dynamic is assigned to each device, so if we have two or more devices to the same network, each one of these will have a different dynamic IP to avoid confusion between them.
Some providers configure the static IP address , although there are many devices where we will have to determine it. This is because if we do not have a static IP address we will not be able to access the information sharing.
The same thing usually happens on the Internet, when we connect, an IP address is generated that identifies us, in this way many of the pages keep a record of the different people or computers that visited it. For this to exist, the colon must share its IPs.
IP versions What is IPv4 and IPv6 and how do they differ?
The more the cyber population grows the greater the demand for data transfer , at first many networks have used the standard protocol known as IP version 4 (IPv4) the which offers IP addresses four bytes (32bits) in length , but thanks to the new studies it has been promoted for some years ago, the IP protocol version 6 (IPv6) whose length is 16 bytes (128 bits).
Whose basis or argument for such a boost, is that version 4 of the IP is no longer enough, since the devices connected to the Internet have grown a lot, and need a channel that offers greater transfer of data.
Doesn’t Protocol Version 5 exist?
The truth is that at the moment this version has not been officially available, however after version 4, the development of the IPv5 protocol was implemented, although its real name was Internet Stream Protocol (ST) , but due to transmission errors, it was abandoned before it became standard.
What are the IP addresses of the internet protocol and what are they for?
IP protocols have the main function of exchanging messages . These messages can carry any information from us, as requested by the recipient, these are often called packages and professionally as datagrams .
They may have different names but in simple terms they refer to the same, because each IP datagram includes both a header, where you specify the origin, destination and other information , as well as your own message data.
This type of protocol is used by many other higher-level protocols, as well as TCP and UDP, as well as all Internet software applications, web browsers, FTP clients and email programs that use this protocol (IP) as a basis.
One of the greatest competition in its time for IP were the IPX / SPX protocols used by Novell NetWare, these were designed to offer services very similar to IP. But despite everything, due to the fall of NetWare as an operating system, the IPX / SPX protocol was forgotten.
What are the types of IP address in a computer network?
IP addresses are grouped into two types, one Public and one Private , then we will show you what are the characteristics of one and the other:
Public IP Address
When we talk about public IP address, we mean all those addresses that are visible from all Internet and that can be used to identify us as users of this great network. These are assigned to servers that are active for 24 hours and we can hire all we need.
The router or modem is usually provided so that it can be used to create a private network. To reduce the situation, these are the number that identifies each interface of the devices within a specific network , and an Internet connection point.
The public IP address can be divided into two subtypes, such as Fixed or Dynamic IPs. Fixed IPs, are those emitted by the device (modem) and never change, these can be domestic or business.
Which is characterized by offering:
- Greater speed in loading and unloading data.
- A more reliable connection
- Higher cost, but worth it, for what it offers.
- Great control over IP addresses, because nobody else can use them.
>
Instead, dynamic IP addresses remain constantly changing, so try to maintain stability in the devices. Whose features are:
- More security than the fixed ones.
- Connection a little bit variant, in terms of speed.
- They make it difficult to track the Internet.
Private IP Address
On the other hand, private IP addresses are the number that identifies each device within the network, usually most devices share the same public IP .
Private IP addresses can be divided into three subtypes:
- Class A: Which are used for large networks, 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255.
- Class B: Whose use is mostly for SMEs or study centers, 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255.
- Class C: Used for small places, such as a house or a small business , 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255.
Steps to find my IP address on all my devices easy and fast
Knowing that the IP is the identifier of our computer or network, we never know what it is. So here we will show you several methods to know the IP address of your Network and the device. Follow the list we provide:
From a website
This is the easiest method since by just visiting a web page that offers us the opportunity to know what our IP is, we can do it, and the best thing is that the method is quite fast.
Check out the step by step:
- Step 1: First we enter vermiip.es or also cualesmiip.com
- Step 2: In both cases, just the page loads, it will give us all the information of our IP and whether or not we are using Proxy.
With Windows
This method is simple, but only works for Windows users:
- Step 1: We go to the network icon or to the optionConfiguration†.
- Step 2: Then we look for the “Network and Internet”
- Step 3: Let’s go to “The network properties” , or we simply look for the optionEstado†.
- Step 4: It will look like a box, which we click on “Details.” There we find a list of all the information of the selected network.
On Android.
Finally we leave you this method, which shows you how to know what the IP is through an Android. To do this we follow the following steps:
- Step 1: Let’s go to “Settings or Configuration”
- Step 2: There, we search “About device or About phone”
- Step 3 : Let’s go to “Status” and it will appear the IP address of the phone , and we can also see the IMEI number and the MAC address of the Wifi.
